1989 Earthquake

I was invited into Joane and Dean's home the summer before my senior year in high school. I was welcomed, cared for and loved the same as her own child. This is not the first time Joane had opened her home and heart to another's child. That year Cherise, Diane and I tested both Joane and Dean's will daily. One of my favorite memories of Joane is when the Loma Prieta Quake hit in '89. We were at the Sheepskin Outlet in Soquel working when it hit. I was upstairs and Joane was sitting at the desk on ground floor. She started shouting at me to come downstairs and get in the doorway with her. She was not freaking out like most would, her main concern was to protect me. I was stubborn and wanted to absorb all the chaos but her tone and look got me in the doorway with her. She had that way about her. A smile on my face as I remember all the good times watching the Foster Freeze Relay Team march by. I know Joane's character helped mold me from the ungrateful boy I was to the man I now am. I will forever be grateful for Joane and Dean's influence on me.
